CBD for dogs and cats – what you need to know

Thinking of starting your pet on CBD? Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know about CBD and how it effects dogs and cats!

“Like humans, dogs (and cats) possess an endocannabinoid system, which consists of receptors directly tied to parts of the brain that manage both pain and mood,” says Min Lee, co-founder of Honest Paws. “CBD interacts with these receptors, resulting in a physiological change that directly helps both discomfort and anxiety. CBD also has natural anti-inflammatory properties, and with inflammation being the most common source of pain, CBD seems very effective in these cases.”

Choosing a product

“People should always look for a full-spectrum product from a reputable source,” advises Min. “Broad spectrum or isolate products typically offer CBD that has been stripped of many of the naturally-occurring cannabinoids and terpenes that work together in a synergistic fashion, also known as the entourage effect. Finding an organic product can also help ensure good quality.”

Are there any contraindications?

“For the most part, CBD is a naturally-occuring phytocannabinoid (meaning a cannabinoid sourced from a plant) that doesn’t seem to produce adverse affects as long as the dosing is within reason,” says Min. “We’ve helped treat tens of thousands of pets, and per compliance with the NASC, we log every single reported adverse event; and I can say without hesitation that the count is statistically non-existent. It would be reckless for me to say CBD is some type of miracle compound but the benefits certainly seem to be overwhelming while the negatives seem to be very marginal.”
